History of Turkish Bread

The bakers of the Ottoman period believed that after his expulsion from the Garden of Eden, Adam, the Patron Saint of Bakers, learned how to make bread from the Archangel Gabriel.

The secret is still held dear by present-day Turkish bakers. No other bread tastes like everyday Turkish bread. Turkish Bread “Ekmek” is a necessity in Turkish Culture, and is not restricted to breakfast, rather it is consumed with all meals at any time of day. This is why you will find that almost every household either bakes their own bread or send their dough to a communal bakery. The baking of bread is such an integral part of the Turkish lifestyle that it is usually made two or three times a day by bakeries.

Serving Suggestions
Our bread can be frozen right in the bag for enjoyment at your convenience. To serve allow to thaw than sprinkle with a small amount of water and warm in the oven for that ‘just baked’ taste.

Chargrilled Turkish Bread Salad:

Place 2cm pieces of Philly cheese on a lined baking tray. Spray with oil and sprinkle with garlic, lemon rind and pepper. Bake in a 200C oven for 10 minutes until lightly browned. Allow to cool slightly. Cut each piece of Turkish Bread in diagonally into evenly sized slices. Spray with oil and toast under chargrill until golden. Arrange the bread into a salad of rocket, avocado, tomatoes and backed Philly cheese on a serving platter. Wisk together balsamic vinegar, oil, sugar and salt and pepper and drizzle over the salad.

With Dips:
The soft and chewy nature of Turkish bread makes it ideal for dipping. Why not use it at your next party as a healthy alternative to chips. Traditionally Turkish bread is toasted then dipped in olive oil then balsamic vinegar.

Turkish Bread Pizza:
Slice the bread in half, spread with tomato paste, and add you favourite toppings, top with grated cheese and bake in the oven until cheese is golden.
